little things by Lindsay B.

When I was little I used to play with Barbies.
When I was little I used to build model cars with my Dad.
When I was little I loved to color and draw.
When I was little I used to make mud and sawdust pies for our pretend dinner.
When I was little I used to climb cherry trees.

I'm not little anymore.
I'm an adult, a Wife, a Mother.

I still love to do the things I used to do, but now I have more knowledge, more responsibility.
With that (for me) comes more stress, anxiety, fear...and sleepless nights.

In my life, I have found that I must make a consious decision to let go of some of the feelings those adult responsibilities bring so I can enjoy the "little things".

Walt Disney said...
"Why do we have to grow up? I know more adults who have the children's approach to life.
They are not afraid to be delighted with simple pleasures, and they have a degree of contentment with what life has brought..."

Wouldn't that be pretty great if I could keep all my responsibilities and still continue to "be delighted with simple pleasures..."
ALL the time?

Your thinking "yeah, right"...right?
For me, that sounds SOO hard, but it's what I want...
so I'm going to go for it and make it a life long goal!
I know it will take me that long to figure out!

I will be the first to admit that the more years go by, the more I seem to ALLOW too many things get in the way of pure delight and contentment.
That is the exact reason I love to write about life's "little things".
I truly believe it is something we ALL need to think about...to work on because it's too easy to let everything else get in the way.

I've been thinking about my childhood and the "little things" that brought me joy back then because of a certain someone whose "little things" list touched my heart.

She is a SUPER special woman to me because she is one of my sisters.
I have 3 gorgeous older sisters who have shown me the ropes in life...and continue to do so.

This particular gorgeous sister of mine has three beautiful children, a handsome husband and a cute dog named 'Cooper'.
AND she lives MUCH too far away!
Her husband travels often and she stays at home and takes care of her MANY responsibilities while he is away.

If I had to describe her in one word I would say: Superwoman...(caring, funny, talented, kind, okay...I know, I said ONE word)
She is amazing people. All my sisters are.

Anyway, she is someone I shared those Barbie playing, model car building, sawdust pies and cherry tree days with.
She's the one who made me eat those sawdust pies....okay, I'm just kidding.

Here she is...

"I've been reading your blog and others posts on "the little things" and it made me reflect upon the things that mean a lot to me.  Lately, which seems to be ALL the time, I'm stressed about EVERYTHING and feel guilty about not being able to do everything, so I don't really think about the "little things."  Thank you for making me stop and think!  Here are my 5 things...

1.  Snuggling up with my kids and reading them a story
2.  Getting a random kiss or hug from my children, especially on a difficult day.
3.  The beautiful pink flowers that are blooming from my azaleas.
4.  A friend who is always there for me.
5.  Knowing that if I messed up today, tomorrow is another day to try a little better!

I hope you find a connection with her!
I have an obvious one, but reading her "little things" list really motivated and inspired me to try harder and search deeper.
I hope it does the same for you.

Just like Walt Disney said...
'Why do we have to grow up?"
The answer is: we don't.

Don't lose sight of life's "simple pleasures" and "little things".
They are there to bring you contentment and joy...let them.

And let us know about it!
We can't wait to hear what you find!

I LOVE this post!! I have really enjoyed them all, but this one hit home so much for me because there was nothing better than growing up with sisters! All of the "little things" that would bring us joy, like playing with our dolls, pretending we were in college like our older sisters, and even just riding our bikes together. My sisters and I look back on those times and say we always wish we could go back and savor them a little more, but I think if we just remember that we can still feel that simple joy when we look for the "little things" each day we won't long to go back as much. Thanks so much for this post, I loved the Walt Disney quotes too!!
